I Need Links Ice Cream Van Vehicle Graphics

Here at The Binary Box we dont only just make custom wall stickers, we are also experience in wrapping vans, cars and the odd caravan but when we were approached by ineedlinks to pimp out an ice cream van we jumped at the opportunity to turn this early 90’s fading relic into a vibrant marketing wagon for the company.

Before

I need links do link building differently, they are an innovative intelligent company set up with over 120 in house staff, they have been link building since the dawn of time. They set out to provide what other companies cannot and what is sometimes just too costly to do yourself.

Sanded

The idea was to create an eye catching vehicle that would display the company’s core service and unique selling points whilst parked up outside various SEO exhibitions across the UK. The fully functioning ice cream pump would be dishing out Yogberries frozen yoghurt to draw in the crowds and create a stir about the I Need Links brand.

First Stage Of Production

We started the project by measuring all of the pieces of the van and creating a template ready to start the design process. Our designers then worked up a variety of options to display the company’s messaging, we then worked with the client to ensure all the core messaging was on the vehicle and would be prominent when visitor were walking past .

Second Stage Of Production

Now the design was ready it was time to start printing the panels on a specialist vehicle wrapping film using UV fade resistant inks, once these were printed a high gloss laminate was applied to protect the artwork from scratching or chipping from debris on the road. Then all of the panels were trimmed to size using our large format guillotines and labelled up so they could be applied in the correct order.

Wrapping

Before applying any of the wrapping vinyl to the vehicle we first had to remove all the existing paintwork from the van and sand this down to a smooth finish as any imperfections would show up once covered with the vehicle graphics. Any rust or dints were smoothed out and filler was used to create an even surface.

Text Application

Prior to applying the graphics a special solution was used to remove and dirt, paintwork and tar to ensure the finish was clean and crisp. All bumpers and trims were sprayed as the plastic had perished and needed to be restored to its former glory.

Completed

Now piece by piece the blue and yellow panels were applied and heat wrapped around all the contours of the ice cream van. Once these we on the lettering and logos could be installed over the top adding the finishing touches to the outside. Finally a custom printed flooring panel was installed and all of the interiors were covered in the yellow and blue polka dot pattern.

On The Road

Keep your eyes out for the I Need Links Ice cream van at an SEO exhibition near you, they recently visited Brighton SEO and were inundated with people queuing up to see what was going on and to bag a free scoop of frozen yoghurt.

Protect Your Home While on Holiday

When you head off for a well deserved holiday it can be easy to forget about the life you left behind – including your home! If it is apparent that your home is unoccupied while you are away on then you may well find that it presents a more attractive opportunity to burglars. However, with a minimum amount of expense and effort it is easy to protect your home while you are gone.

Give The Illusion of Occupancy

According to a recent survey by Crimestoppers, an experienced burglar are less likely to break into a home which is occupied. Some of the things that that will signal to a burglar that the house is currently unoccupied include :

The presence (or absence) of cars in the driveway.

Outdoor lights left on all day and night.

Mail & Newspapers that have not been collected.

Snow covered paths or driveways that are free from tracks.

A 'closed up' appearance.

In order to combat these unoccupied signals, you should ask a friend or relative to drop round to collect your mail, or if that is not possible ask the postal service to hold your mail for the duration of your holiday. You an also arrange for your grass to be mown, or the snow shovelled from your driveway depending on the season.

Use Electronic Timers

It is possible to install electronic timers to turn on your lights, television or radio at various times to make it seem like there are people at home. The only danger is setting the timers for the same time each day as this may make it obvious that they are automated. However, there are many timers on the market – including those that can be operated via an app on your smartphone – which allow you to vary the times from day to day. Some individuals even like to go so far as to make a recording of people chatting which can be played inside their home, making it appear that there are people inside.

Practice Discretion When It Comes To Holiday Plans

When you are excited about an upcoming holiday, it is easy to get carried away talking about it. Perhaps you have told your hairdresser, taxi drivers, and various other people. While you may trust them, have you taken the time to make sure there are not strangers close by who could overhear your plans? You never know who is listening in and making note of the dates when you will be out of town.

In recent years, the growing popularity of social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter means that there are more and more people sharing their holiday plans online. If your posts are visible to the public then you could be announcing to potential burglars that your house unoccupied giving them the perfect opportunity to break in. When it comes to discussing holiday plans, discretion is the name of the game.

Investing in a Security System

It is documented that approximately half of all burglars will not attempt to break into a home which has a visible security system. There is no better way to secure your property than to have a home alarm system installed in the property. There are a number of options available to you when it comes to choosing a security system. Depending on your individual needs and your budget, you can choose from a variety of system features including :

  door and window sensors

  motion sensors

  glass break sensors

remote monitoring via your mobile phone or email

security cameras

automatic law enforcement notification

If you follow the advice offered in this article, you can reduce the chances that your home will be burgled while you are away on that well deserved holiday. You will be able to relax, safe in the knowledge that your home is adequately protected.

Interior Design Trends of 2013

The trends of 2013 are all about originality. Creating a quirky atmosphere, a space which reflects your personality and incorporating just a few features from earlier eras is the ideal way to design this year. Vibrant colours, simple yet elegant pieces and little nuggets of your character are the perfect way to be in keeping with the hottest home fashion. Creating the ultimately stylish home has never been so easy, just follow these few tips and you’ll have the house of your dreams in no time!

Quick, Simple Fashion

Wall stickers are a brilliant way to enliven any room and add a simple quirky edge with little fuss. Picking an artist who has inspired you or a quote which you can relate too is always a brilliant way of welcoming your personality into your home. Banksy, the British street artist with an international reputation, has work which will not only be amusing or pleasing to you and your visitors, wall stickers of his work placed on one wall will add a unique, stylish feature to any interior.

Splashing 2013 Colour

Bold colours with a lively pattern will bring a fresh perspective and create a warm and inviting retreat. Deep purples and vibrant yellows or oranges, are the perfect backdrop for fresh, white furniture and trinkets which speak out about your personality. For a more of a fresh, airy atmosphere a coastal feel would be the perfect option, duck egg blues, creams and chalky greys teamed up with patterned rugs and throws or the odd nautical accessory will produce the ideal relaxing and characterised style.

Patterns and Small Accessories

Graphic design in the year of 2013 is taking a modern approach to tribal themes, rugs, wallpapers and the entire rooms are being dedicated to the mis-matching of patterns. Geometric patterns make great studies for mixing and matching. Make sure the colour scheme you choose is congruent throughout the room by matching your chosen wall colours to the accessories you adorn your interiors with. Placing cushions or small candles and accessories in these patterns is not only quick and simple to do, it is so effective and fashionable. Another way of adding pattern to your home is a feature wall, purchasing wall paper with a little difference would be the perfect focal point for any room of the house. If you’re working on a kitchen, mis-match tiles or a checker board style are great ways to create a space with a unique feel and a trendy atmosphere.

The trends of 2013 are bright, bold and quirky, however comfort is paramount so remember to not get carried away with styles you see in magazines and instead adapt these to your own tastes.

This guest post was brought to you by Tiles UK who have a wide selection of wall and floor tiles for the home, perfect for modern living rooms. Take a look through the tiles on offer and you will be sure to pick tiles following the trends of 2013 and the many years to come.

Teenager's Bedroom on a Budget

They are notoriously difficult to please and have tastes that range from the sublime to the extremely bizarre! The interior of a teenager's bedroom varies greatly as each usually chooses to decorate their inner sanctum themselves. Their choice of posters, colours and soft furnishings are all carefully chosen to give a clear picture of their own interests and personality.

Some of the moods portrayed can be made using anything from a paintbrush to a particular heavy metal band poster and can be quite shocking to an unsuspecting parent. Even making it through the door of one of theses bedrooms is a massive achievement, so what happens if you need/want to get the bedroom decorated? What if it's well past its sell by date?

Some teenagers will be well against the idea of decorating their bedroom, 'destroying' their space and will probably try to turn you against the idea by flatly refusing to let you go past the door. But what if you could turn the experience into a money saving venture that gets you both involved?

Most parents wouldn't dream of letting an argumentative teenager anywhere near a tin of paint, never mind a roll of wallpaper and furniture, but given some handy tips, a few guidelines and the ability to let them have a say on the design of their room, most parents and their offspring will probably be pleasantly surprised.

Decorating a room is also the ideal time to have a clear out of all those unwanted items, creating new space and allowing the person to only keep what is really needed. A good storage system can then be used to keep all belongings organised and tidy. It's a good idea to get your son or daughter to do the clearing out themselves as you don't want to be accused of snooping!

Depending on the theme of the room (if there is one), storage systems and furniture can either be bought or revamped to fit the theme. If the room is quite small, a large patterned wallpaper would be too overpowering and make the room seem a lot smaller. Choose a good, neutral colour paint that can be used on all four walls and then choose a vinyl wall sticker as a feature on the main wall.

Wall stickers are becoming more and more popular as a quick and interesting focal point to all sorts of rooms. They are easy to apply and there is a massive choice of designs to choose from. Let the person who will be using the room choose their own design. Smaller wall stickers can also be used on items of furniture such as drawers and wardrobes so the theme can be continued across the room.

Another idea for decorating furniture is 'Spray Art'. You have to be fairly brave to go with this idea, but if it is done carefully, the results can be individual and creative. To try this method you will need some cans of spray paint, masking tape, newspaper and a protective face mask. The item of furniture you choose to decorate needs to be outside and standing on the newspaper. When spraying the item you need to decide if there is a particular design and if there is, certain areas will need to be masked off. This will stop areas that don't need to be painted from being covered. Spray the paint at arms length and wear the face mask when spraying to protect yourself from the fumes.

This idea works well in a street art themed bedroom, as you can do any design you want to. This is a good idea for any teenagers who may be particularly good at graffiti or writing.

When you have finished painting, pick out any key colours to help decide on curtains and bedding. To save money you could always dye existing curtains and bedding to match your colour scheme or you could even buy 'new' curtains and bedding from a charity shop and dye those instead.

A clever and attractive way to display items on shelves and walls can be achieved using old drawers. If you have some old drawers knocking about, they can be painted by hand or spray painted as above. You can then either paint inside the drawers or stick wallpaper, photographs or your own artwork inside of them. This adds to the decoration and also brightens up the inside of the drawers. The drawers can then be hung up on the wall using either picture wire and hooks or flat picture attachments and then ornaments and the like can be placed inside.

All these methods can be used, or just a few of them, to create a new, fresh room that is both decorative and inviting.

Now that was time well spent.

Andy Warhol Portraits Go Public

For almost five decades, five portraits of Andy Warhol posing next to some of his most iconic works of art, have been kept locked in storage. Some of the photos show Warhol in the middle of some of his prints, wearing them like a sandwich board, others show him standing alongside them.

The portraits where taken in 1964, at the start of Warhols creative period at his Factory studio in New York. They depict Warhol standing with some his 'Flowers', 'Marilyn' and self portraits, themselves being some of his most enduring works of art.

The 'Homage To Warhol's Marilyn' shows Warhol standing next to a fire escape with the light of the Fire Exit sign glowing above his head. He also poses behind an acetate of Marilyn, used in one of his Marilyn prints, his face blending, saddened, with a Hollywood icon.

Warhol liked to use art as a means of expression and he would create screenprints to 'voice' his beliefs of political movements and laws. Warhol used his new screenprints of the 'Birmingham Race Riots' on a sandwich board which he then wore on himself whilst standing in the silver reflections of Billy Name's silver foil. The riots had taken place only weeks before.

The collection will go on show for the first time at The Armory Show in New York. The leading, international contemporary and modern art fair is one of the most important annual arts events in New York and this year it will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Armory Show.

The show is devoted to showcasing the most important artworks of the 20th and 21st centuries, so seemed the ideal place to show these new prints to the art world for the first time. Then its up to the art critics and the general public to decide there worth.

Banksy

Picture the scene. A lovely, quiet, suburban, tree-lined street, full of 4x4 family cars, gas powered barbecues and topiary shaped hedges, trimmed within an inch of their lives.

This typical middle class existence provides a safe haven for many families where neighbours meet for a chat over a latte to discuss all the weekly, local goings on. Do you really know everything about your neighbours?

Would you know if Banksy lived on your street?

Banksy, the elusive graffiti artist continues to puzzle the public and the art world alike, failing to tell the world who he really is. No public naming, and some would say shaming for him.

Understandably, for a graffiti artist being anonymous is important. Being caught by the 'old bill' isn't something they want to risk each night. But in the 1990s, as Banksy started to make a name for himself in Bristol, things changed. He started to collaborate with other artists and musicians around Bristol such as Nick Walker, Inkie and 3D from the band Massive Attack, who is said to be a huge influence and became a member of the now famous Bristol Underground Scene.

His work has been likened to Blek le Rat, Jef Aerosol and even members of the politically dangerous punk band Crass as they used stencils in a graffiti campaign on the London Underground in the 70's and 80's. Banksy's work is much more anti-war, anti-establishment and anti-capitalist than other graffiti artists using imagery such as children, apes, policeman and the elderly.

Overnight, images such as these would appear on public buildings and walls, each putting across their own individual message. Some of the pictures could only be seen from certain directions, depending on which way you walked up a particular street. This meant they weren't always noticed straight away.

His early pictures were created free-hand, only starting to use stencils around 2000. This was a quicker and easier way to produce a picture meaning Banksy could be done and away before being spotted and possibly arrested.

As Banksy started to make more of a name for himself around Bristol and London, he joined the DryBreadZ Crew (DBZ) along with fellow artists Kato and Tes. He was now travelling around more and by June 2002, he had his first Los Angeles exhibition. This was a big deal at the time and was followed in 2003 by an exhibition in a warehouse called 'Turf War'. For this exhibition Banksy painted on animals causing some upset.

Banksy then moved on to re-paint famous paintings by artists such as Edward Hopper and Monet, adding his own ideas to the originals.

In 2004 Banksy produced a quantity of fake £10 notes replacing the Queens head with that of Diana, Princess of Wales and changing the 'Bank of England' text to 'Banksy of England'. Somebody then proceeded to throw a wad of these into a crowd at the Notting Hill Carnival and the NME tent at the Reading Festival. Further exhibitions followed in Sydney, and a Los Angeles exhibition entitled 'Barely Legal' in 2006.

By 2006-2007, Banksy's work was beginning to fetch huge sums at auction, setting a record in October 2006 where his silk screen prints of Kate Moss fetched a record £50,400 and his stencil of a green Mona Lisa sold for £57,600 at the same auction, but a record high of £288,000 was reached in April 2007 for 'Space Girl and Bird'.

Unfortunately, some of Banksy's iconic work has been lost as Transport for London amongst others decided to paint over or remove some of his work from their property as they claimed that the 'graffiti' created an atmosphere of neglect and social decay.

Banksy has continued to add artwork to many buildings in places such as London, New Orleans, Alabama, Salt Lake City, Australia and Liverpool. Sadly, not all of these pieces have survived.

In 2010 Banksy made and released the film 'Exit Through the Gift Shop' which went on to be nominated for a Best Documentary Oscar. The film didn't win the Oscar, but he was driven to respond by producing a piece of art depicting a girl holding an Oscar and pouting.

Banksy's popularity still continues to grow as his work is still sort after and continues to fetch record prices at auction. He has also written a number of books, produced a storyboard for an episode of The Simpsons and made a bust of a priest, a statement about the scandal of child abuse in the catholic church.

So, lets look at the evidence. On the street where you live, is there a house that provokes gossip? Is there a house that has numerous visitors, arty types and musicians who like to party into the night whilst listening to controversal punk music and trip-hop. experimental rock? Are there lots of empty spray cans and used cardboard stencils spilling from wheely bins on bin day with new art appearing on the outside walls overnight?

Maybe you don't see the owner/occupants very often as they prefer to keep themselves to themselves and they travel a lot, but if this sounds like a house and a person on your street, maybe, just maybe, Banksy lives on your street...

Batman, along with faithful sidekicks Robin, Batwoman and Batgirl, was kapowing some silver stealing aliens capable of interplanetary teleportation.

A canny reporter called Perry had discovered all about Clark Kent and his alter ego, putting Superman's fight against crime in jeopardy, wham!

Splash! Aquaman and Aquaboy were fighting spiked sea beasts from Atlantis.

The Flash was getting socked by Elongated Man and Captain Cold.

Wonder Woman couldn't stop growing! At one point she was as tall as a skyscraper … zok!

It would actually be another month until Spiderman got his own comic, where in his very first issue he was being bopped by the Fantastic Four. So for the time being, let's say Peter Parker was between jobs*.

The Hulk was doing some powing of his own, having encountered the evil Roman Tyrannus and his mechanized gladiators, the Tyrannoids.

Aside from the obvious connections of being super, utterly heroic and having epic powers, the most memorable elements shared by all the above are the iconic fight scene flashes. A sublime use of onomatopoeia to convey the power us lesser mortals can only dream of. Imagine how cool it would be to have a selection of these on your living room or bedroom wall. The re-enactment possibilities with your favorite hero and nemesis are endless.

Thinking more about it, imagine how cool the characters symbols would look too! The letters, numbers, mammals, arachnids, lightning strikes, skulls, stars … contact Binary Box today for a chat, they will be able to design you a bespoke decal that'll not only look fantastic, but incredible, amazing and super to boot.

* Spiderman first appeared in Amazing Fantasy#15 August 1962, quite how the final issue of a tin-bucket heritage series birthed such a holy grail comic character, I'll never know, but I'm pleased they did.

The Nature of Interior Design

This month, leading carpet tile manufacturer Interface have announced a groundbreaking new range of floor coverings. They're calling it the Urban Retreat collection and it's all about forging connections between indoor and outdoor spaces and bridging the gap between the rural and the urban.

Inspired by nature...

Interface say their new designs are based on something called 'biophilia', which is a theory that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other organic systems. For Interface, this 'urge to affiliate with other forms of life' has spawned the creation of a range of floor coverings that are inspired by, and pay homage to, the natural world. These cutting-edge designs blur the boundary between indoors and outdoors by incorporating the sublime beauty of nature within urban and industrial spaces.

...Refined by design

If you like this idea, take a look at our Tree collection of wall stickers, which features a wide range of stickers inspired by natural surroundings. Our wall stickers are really easy to apply and within minutes can transform any inner city dwelling into a tranquil forest setting. Including designs recommended by top designers like Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, our Tree collection is inspired by nature but refined by modern, up-to-date craftsmanship that creates stunning, bold lines and inspiring focal points.

The Rise and Rise of Ziggy Stardust

The world has certainly been through plenty of ch-ch-changes since David Bowie last released a single over a decade ago, but the irrepressible British rock star is back this week with his appropriately titled single 'Where Are We Now?', which has entered the singles charts at number 6. In honour of its release we at The Binary Box are celebrating all things Bowie - and you can too with this Ziggy Stardust-era David Bowie wall sticker from our Icons collection.

David Bowie was born David Robert Jones on January 8th 1947 in Brixton, London. His first appearance on the UK charts was with the now-classic 'Space Oddity' which, released in 1969, reached number 5. This song, inspired by Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey and the Apollo 11 launch and lunar landing, which took place just a few days following its release, tells the bittersweet darkly comic tale of Major Tom, a British astronaut lost in space. The track introduced the world to Bowie's unique musical style, which is renowned for its intellectually challenging concepts and progressive, complex soundscapes.

Bowie's success continued in 1972, which saw the advent of his glam rock alter-ego Ziggy Stardust and the release of 'Starman'. Ziggy Stardust's excessive, androgynous persona has been picked out by critics as an example of Bowie's ability to constantly reinvent his image and music without changing the core message of his work.

The hit album Young Americans, released in 1975, saw Bowie's first real success across the Atlantic, reaching the top 10 of the US charts. This album, inspired by 'lush strings, sliding hi-hat whispers, and swanky R&B rhythms of Philadelphia Soul', was Bowie's tribute to the importance of black soul music for contemporary rock and roll.

Bowie achieved further successes in the 1980s with the albums Scary Monsters (and Super Freaks) (1980) and Let's Dance (1983), and the classic collaboration with Queen, 'Under Pressure' (1981). Bowie's reputation by this point had become synonymous with eclectic musical styles informed by a wide range of influences, from classical to industrial, tempered by a pervading, unmistakable sound that gives all of his music a sense of coherence and unity. This sound continued into the nineties and naughties with a series of album releases and high-profile collaborations with the likes of Annie Lennox, David Gilmlour and Alicia Keys.

Not satisfied with his overwhelming successes in the music industry, Bowie also has a notable acting career under his shiny spandex belt, his most memorable performances coming in Nic Roeg's surreal science fiction mood-piece The Man Who Fell to Earth (1969), Jim Henson's classic fantasy fable Labyrinth (1986), and, more recently, playing the role of Nikola Tesla in Christopher Nolan's The Prestige (2006).

'Where Are We Now', which was released on Bowie's 66th birthday, is the first single from his new album, The Next Day, which will come out in March this year. The single is a nostalgic saunter around some of Germany's iconic landmarks and captures Bowie's unmistakable style in a mature slow-tempo ballad that speaks to the passing of the ages and the long, eventful years of Bowie's career.

Putting a Value on Interior Design

Putting a Value on Interior Design

Whether you’re doing it to spruce up your living space or you’re looking to increase your home’s value before selling, good design can do wonders for your house. Unlike a TV, bookcase or any individual item of furniture, the interior design of a room or a house is less tangible, so it can be difficult to give it a definite value. So what is the value of interior design?

Basic Value

To get a general idea of what interior design is worth, you can look at what a professional interior designer would charge you for the work. Of course, this is going to vary between designers and in different parts of the country. This also depends on how they charge for their work; a simple design often comes with a standard, flat fee, whereas a more bespoke job would charge by the hour (and would probably be more expensive). The average hourly fee stands at around £40 per hour, whereas if you were to get a flat fee on a small room you’d be looking at something in the region of £500 to £2000. These costs don’t include materials or labour.

Increased Value

Of course, that’s the cost of hiring the designer, not for the value of the finished product. Another way to look at it is if you were to sell your house, how much extra value would interior decoration add to the selling price? There is no hard and fast rule for this, but in 2011, reworking the floors of a house increased the value of the property on average by £2153, and redecorating the house raised the value by £3229 [source: The Guardian]. Since tastes change year in, year out, this figure is likely to fluctuate.

A spacious looking room in neutral colours increases its aesthetics and appeal to would-be buyers, and the current trends favour hard floors such as wood or stone because of their longevity. Neutrality is the key to increasing a home’s value, since potential buyers want to imagine their vision of the house décor, not yours. Additions such as the blackboard door planner sticker provided by The Binary Box (£29.99) won’t interrupt the aesthetic of the room and add an extra level of functionality that would be seen as attractive.

Incorporating these elements into your design will put you in good stead when it comes to reselling and should help to bump up the asking price by up to £5000.

Insured value

Okay, so you’ve got the definite cost of making the design happen, and the potential value it adds by having it there. What about the cost to replace it if it was gone? Say your house was hit by subsidence or a fire, and the rooms were beyond repair and had to be completely remodelled. How much value would your home insurance company place on the design as opposed to the ‘stuff’ in the room? Depending on what kind of home insurance you have in place, they might not pay out, making it worthless.

Your basic home insurance policy is broken down into two types, “buildings” and “contents”. Buildings insurance covers, you guessed it, the building itself, but also all the stuff that’s fixed to it. Imagine that the house has (for some reason) been turned upside down. All the stuff that doesn’t move when this happens is covered under buildings insurance, so that’s your bath, doors, windows and floor. This also includes wallpaper and ‘interior decorations’ that are fixed to the house.

Here’s where things get interesting. Although the floor counts as part of the building, the carpet doesn’t. Though your carpet might be fixed to the floor, in the eyes of insurers it’s fairly easy to rip up a carpet and take it somewhere else, so it counts as ‘contents’. This also applies to laminate wood flooring that isn’t glued together. Also, since all of the wall stickers provided by thebinarybox.co.uk are easy to remove (all you need is a hairdryer to heat the adhesive of the vinyl and slowly peel the sticker off the wall), the sticker itself comes under ‘contents’, but the but the wallpaper and wall that they’re on are covered under ‘buildings’. Check out these fitting videos for further instructions on the application and removal of the wall stickers.

So unless you’ve got both buildings and contents insurance, you’ll probably only be covered for the walls and ceiling or the floor when it comes to paying out for the interior design, but not both. In any case, make sure you factor in the cost of replacing the décor when you value your home for the insurance, otherwise you might find yourself short changed when you try to claim.

It looks like there will be a surge in interest and prices as blue and white china becomes fashionable again. Classic blue and white china style patterns on soft furnishings and new ceramics, inspired by the old, are set to attract a new following.

Kids' Crafts - Jam Jar Snow Dome

Jam Jar Snow Dome

Materials needed

1 clean jam jar
Plasticine
Waterproof glue
Hot glue gun
Glitter
Water

Step 1
Decide what scene you are going to make to go inside the jam jar. Don't make it too
difficult, simple designs look the best.
When you have picked your object (snowman, Christmas tree, Christmas pudding or
present etc) start making it out of plasticine/modelling clay.

Step 2
When you have finished making the object, carefully glue any pieces together that might
fall apart. Eg- snowmans head to his body. Also check that the figure fits into the jam jar.
Use the waterproof glue to do this and make sure the glue is completely set before the
next step.

Step 3
Use the waterproof glue to glue the figure to the underneath of the jam jar lid. Allow a few
minutes for the glue to dry and then check that the figure is secure.

Step 4
Whilst you are waiting for the glue to set, you can be adding glitter to the jam jar. Tip the
required amount to the bottom of the jam jar. It is up to you how much you use, depending
on the overall affect you want to achieve.

Step 5
When you are sure your figure is firmly secured to the lid, screw the lid on to the jam jar.
This is just to test that the whole thing is secure and looks ok.
Slowly add cold water to the jar with a jug. Remember to leave a small space near the top
to allow for displacement.

Step 6
Carefully lower the figure into the jam jar and add glue from the hot glue gun to the outside
rim of the jam jar. Make sure an adult does this bit.
Screw the lid into place and tighten. The glue will keep the lid water tight.

Step 7
Shake the jar gently and see the magical effect!

Christmas in a Small Space

Have you ever looked around your living room and wondered how you will ever fit in Christmas and all of its colourful decorations?

Whether you're a young, professional couple or a small family, you may well be feeling the squeeze when it comes to space in the home. You want something that appeals to your sense of style and budget, and a home fitted with all the latest gadgets is proving to be more popular now than ever.

When it comes to decorating and furnishing a flat or small house, space can be of optimum importance. Things have to be measured accurately and every square foot has to be considered wisely. It's no good popping down to your local Ikea for a basket full of goodies if you have nowhere to put them!

It's important that your decor reflects your taste. Minimalist, Shabby Chic, Retro, whatever your style, designing a small space can be tricky.

So, add to that the difficulties of not only decorating a small space for Christmas and the possibility of entertaining family and friends, but also the yearly dilemma of where to put the Christmas Tree! As televisions have got bigger, the more space they take up in a living room. You then have to allow for a big, comfy sofa, possibly a chair, bookcases, computer desk and even a small table and chairs. Being careful not to over-decorate your living room and turning it into a tacky mess, you know that Christmas wouldn't be the same without a tree. So what can you do?

A good stylish solution is a vinyl transfer. They are a great way of making an impact without losing any of the space in your room. Our Christmas Tree comes complete with baubles, stockings, candy canes and presents for you to show off your creativity! This festive wall sticker also comes with a Wreath that can be used elsewhere in your home or even on your front door. All the stickers are easy to use and completely removable after Christmas. They create an immediate impact and focal point to a room and take away the worry of knowing where to put a traditional tree.

Now you know that you don't have to give up a lot of space to a Christmas Tree and you won't lose your sense of style.

And what a great talking point.

If you want to keep your interior spaces up-to-date with the latest trends but can't afford the time, cost and effort involved in redecorating, Binary Box wall stickers are the perfect way to add a new dimension to an old room, and now you can get the latest cool designs in our London Collection.

In the last two years London has come to the forefront of world news in spectacular style, with a series of auspicious events drawing global attention. Will and Kate's glamourous wedding in 2011 really helped to update the image of the Royal Family, with Kate's dress causing much excitement across the design world. Meanwhile, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee showed that Londoners know how to throw a world class party. The hugely successful 2012 Olympics demonstrated that London is an important, vibrant, and culturally diverse city that embodies the sentiments of fair play, excellence and achievement celebrated by the Games.

But of course there is more to London than its recent successes. London is a city steeped in a fascinating history that is still hugely evident in its streets and landmarks today. The UK's capital has always been synonymous with culture, class and style, a fact that is illustrated to great effect by Binary Box's London Collection. It showcases a range of renowned London icons - such as the famous red double-decker bus - that encapsulate the city's acclaimed retro chic. Indeed, perhaps the real appeal of London is its ability to embody both trend and tradition, to be modern and timeless, to have its finger on the pulse and a foot in the past.

Get some London chic for your walls today! thebinarybox.co.uk/collections/london-category.html

Wall Stickers: The Quickest Way to Spruce Up Your Bathroom

If there are two rooms in a house that are said to contribute the most to the saleability of houses, it’s the kitchen and the bathroom. Buyers pay extra attention to these two rooms, as they are the hardest and most expensive to change. If these two rooms are updated, clean and with nice décor, then it’s likely that the home will sell faster and for more money.

In order to make your bathroom an asset, you don’t have to spend a whole lot of money. As long as your bathroom suite is clean and in good condition, the plumbing fittings are working well and look good too, then it’s just really just the tiling and walls to worry about. These can be attended to before you put your house on the market.

A quick way to freshen up any room is to give it a coat of paint. The smaller the room, the lighter the colour should be. By using a neutral colour, you’ll be able to deliver a blank canvas to buyers. They’ll be able to picture their belongings in the room and themselves living there. Blank walls don’t look too attractive, but this can be changed rapidly with the use of vinyl wall stickers.

Wall stickers come in a large variety of patterns, designs and colours. You’ll just need to ensure that you select a design that is suitable to your room – this means size, colour and theme. Getting something that is too large for the room will make it feel overwhelming to enter.

Getting a home ready for selling can be challenging. However, with the use of vinyl wall stickers, it’s easy to make changes rapidly that won’t require a contractor to change.

Decorating Girl’s Bedrooms With Wall Stickers

Girls love to have a unique bedroom of their own and with wall stickers they don’t have to just use them for wall décor either. It’s possible to add them to doors, tables, cabinets and study areas.

Most girls are often quite particular and want everything in the room to be ’just so’. Boys are usually more impulsive and generally aren’t too worried about how coordinated their room is or what posters they have up.

Wall stickers are a favourite with young females. There is a large variety of different wall stickers that can be used to decorate the room. It’s a great way to save funds too. Nowadays, not everybody has plenty of cash to spend on changing décor and adding a unique style to a room.

If your daughter likes nature then there are plenty of stickers to choose from. How about a flower tree that can take up almost the whole of one wall and will bring the garden into the bedroom.

These vintage village bunting wall stickers come in pastel colours and give a feminine touch. How about a tea cup stack wall sticker for a splash of pink and blue?

Alternatively you can use these alphabet letter wall stickers to spell out the name of the owner of the room, or even a favourite pop start.

Wall stickers are very easy to apply. You just need to ensure that the surface is clean, dust free and dry. Then peel back the backing and use a sponge to smooth into place. It’s also easy to remove them too – in case you need to reposition or change the theme of the room. However, once a sticker has been in place for a period of time, you cannot count on it being removed in one piece.

Wall Stickers: Decoration That Can Grow and Evolve With Your Children

Children love decorative themes. It’s something that helps them claim a bedroom as their own space with their own style. However, it can be expensive to add wallpaper and regular painting can be a lot of hard work. Not to mention that children grow up fast. This is where wall stickers really come into play.

Wall stickers are the perfect solution for keeping a child’s room up to date and inspirational. A neutral colour can be used on the wall as the background, and wall stickers can be applied, removed and changed as the youngster age.

Small children can enjoy counting sheep, farmyard animals such as this cow wall sticker, or even measure their height with these Giraffe height chart wall stickers. You can opt to give them a daily reminder of how to spell their name with these alphabet letter wall stickers.

Older children might like an astronaut floating on the wall. Girls will love this flower tree wall sticker. Teenagers are known for getting obsessed with things (or people). You can seek out wall stickers that provide them with the perfect image for their bedroom. Bob Marley anybody?

Another great idea that is very practical is the use of blackboard stickers. They provide an area to draw or write that can be reused time and time again. They don’t have to be used just in the bedroom either; you may want to install them in the kitchen so that you can leave notes for your kids.

All our wall stickers are made of high quality vinyl. They are easy to apply and can be used to great effect. Having willow branches coming out of your ceiling can give a great effect that will leave your guests marvelling.

Isn’t it time you saved cash and decorated with something a little more modern and up to date? Wall stickers provide an excellent decorating solution.

Banksy Wall Stickers: Wall Art With Social Commentary

Whether you’re a big fan of Banksy’s designs, you want to show your allegiance to his message or you simple want something different, these Banksy wall stickers could be just the thing.

Who is Banksy?

Nobody actually knows who the infamous Banksy actually is, but apparently he was born in 1974 in the Bristol area of the UK. He has made a name for himself by using graffiti art to communicate his strong political beliefs and to deliver a social commentary. His works are located in many cities all over the planet. Whether or not you agree with the messages that he shares, he is undeniably a producer of eye-catching, thought-provoking arresting works.

Banksy’s work is designed to deliver a talking point. It’s powerfully simple and can sometimes be humorous. Other times it’s a bit shocking and has mostly been a big hit with the communities that it’s been discovered in. Many authorities have chosen to keep the artwork due to its popularity.

Even though none of us can manage to track Banksy down so that he can produce some custom designs for the home, it’s possible to install one of his pieces of artwork through the use of a Banksy wall sticker. Applying one will provoke conversation in your home with visitors and guests.

Which Banksy is for you?

Fortunately wall stickers will stick on any clean, flat surface so this makes your choice wider than it might otherwise be. You aren’t hemmed in so much by the size of the space available to you.

You can enjoy Banksy’s powerful artwork in the comfort of your own home. You can choose between:

Common Myths of Wall Stickers

When it comes to wall stickers, some people are not too clear about what they are and what they can do. We thought we’d clear up a few myths with today’s post.

Myth 1: Wall decals are stickers

Wall decals aren’t stickers exactly as usually stickers are made of paper or plastic. Wall decals are made of vinyl and can be applied using heat. The use of heat actually helps the wall sticker to stick better on the surface.

Myth 2: Decals are just for walls

In fact, this isn’t true at all. Any clean, smooth and hard surface will take a wall sticker. You won’t be limited to decorating just indoors either, you can take your wall stickers to the outside and use some of the designs to add a little bit of something different to your alfresco space. How about an image of Bob Marley in amongst your ferns or even a flowering blossom tree to get you through the days of winter?

Myth 3: You need to use wallpaper paste

This isn’t true as you just need to position your wall sticker, then carefully peel off the back and stick. It’s very important that you use a clean and dry surface to stick to though. You may want to wash down the surface first and then allow it to dry before sticking any designs to it.

Myth 4: It will ruin the paint

Mmmmm. To be honest, anything will ruin the paint if it’s poorly applied or if it’s old. If it’s bubbling paint then it will drop off by having your hand run over it, let alone sticking a wall sticker to it and then pulling it off again.

When you want to remove wall stickers, then remember that heat will help you to remove it. You can apply a hairdryer to help you get it off the wall with limited damage. But we don’t expect that it will cause any damage, but better safe than sorry.

Add Your Favourite Quote to The Wall

Finding something inspirational can make a big difference to our lives. The recent Olympics certainly did this for a lot of people. Many people right across the country mentioned how inspired they were by the athletes as they achieved their goals.

Inspiration can come in many forms. It might be an image that is used to represent something meaningful and sometimes it’s a quote that makes all the difference to inspire somebody to follow their dream.

Here at the Binary Box Wall Sticker Company we’ve got a few stickers for you that could inspire you. Either you can use one of our designs that will communicate your meaningful message or you can write up your own with our range of letters.

Applying letters directly to the wall will give an attractive splash of colour. Alternatively you could opt for a blackboard background and then write your own message on it with a quote that you choose to live by. Adding one of these quotes to your wall will help others to be inspired by it.

Classrooms are another place where quotes can be added. They can inspire thoughts in the students and as they view them on a daily basis, they will be internalised to form a part of the child’s values.

If you want to give an educational message or an inspirational message then wall stickers can provide you with that option. Not only can you choose your quote, but you’ll be able to select the colour and the font that you want it written in. Vinyl wall stickers look professional but they are relatively reasonable in price.

To find out more about what we offer, view our full range of wall stickers.

Wall Stickers Go Al Fresco

You’ve no doubt noticed by now that wall stickers are the latest trend in home décor and it doesn’t look like the interest in them is dying down either. They’ve been featured extensively in interior magazines for the last few years. But they don’t have to be used exclusively inside the home, they can also be used on the outside.

Pretty much all the vinyl stickers that can be used for application on the interior can be used on the exterior. All that’s needed is a flat and clean surface to apply them. They will last longer on the inside of the home as they won’t have the weather to battle, but they will still last several years, which is about as long as people usually live with a style anyway.

So where would you go about applying your wall stickers? Well there are plenty of clean and smooth surfaces on the outside. How about on the masonry that surrounds your al fresco eating area or on the top of your glass table. You could even opt to add one to the back door. Vinyl stickers work very well on glass.

As for designs, you may want to add something soft to an urban garden such as flowers to break up some of the hard surfaces. You could add a little quirkiness with a Banksy design to make a statement. Otherwise, go for a palm tree or even a blossom tree. Try one of the new rock icons on a blank wall and you’ll have something unique for your guests to enjoy.

We’ve all seen how great wall stickers look when they’re applied on the inside of the home and now it’s time to take them alfresco. Share with us what you’ve been doing by adding your photos to our Facebook page.

Visiting the doctor or the dentist can be an intimidating experience for many children. A stark and cold looking waiting room can only add to the anxiety as they wait to see the medical professional. By making the room into a warmer and friendly environment, children will feel more at ease and more comfortable. It’s easy to make changes to décor with wall stickers in your medical waiting room.

Wall stickers are easy to apply and they’re made of vinyl so can be wiped clean with a damp cloth. If you have a large waiting room or several rooms, then different wall stickers can be used in each one. This can be run on a colour or content theme. The value of using different themes or colours is so that the child will not get lost or confused if they go to the loo and then need to return to the right place. They’ll be able to use the images as a navigation aid and to reassure them that they have returned to the right room.

Use Wall Stickers for Other Surfaces Than Your Home Walls

Wall stickers are all the rage right now and they don’t have to be used just on the wall either. With the enormous range of styles and colours available, they can be used to decorate just about any item that is large enough to take them.

Some people like to add wall stickers to sliding doors and windows. A big benefit of doing this is the safety aspect that it offers. Making glass visible prevents people from walking into a pane of glass and it give it a fresh edge at the same time.

Wall stickers can be applied in minutes. They last for years but if you tire of them, they’re quick and easy to remove. Just take a corner and peel them off.

They can be used to decorate inside childrens playhouses and summer house interiors. Glamping can take on a trendy look with the application of stickers to the inside or even outside of tents. If you want to get more use from them, then use another type of adhesive to keep them reusable.

If you’ve got a tired old fridge, then applying a wall sticker to the door or side will give it a new lease of life. It will cover any rust or draw the eye away from damage.

Wall stickers can be used on practically any smooth surface including surfaces outside of the home. How about a collection of Mr Benn characters in the garden to amuse the children?

To add wall stickers to your garden, just find a flat and smooth piece of wood of the right size, ensure that it’s clean and dry. Apply your wall stickers and you can add a piece of wood as a stick. These can then be placed anywhere in the garden. Other ideas are the bird feeder sticker, trees, Keep Calm signs and the Banksy Girl with a Balloon. Wall stickers will work anywhere that they will stick.

General Tips On How To Apply Wall Decals

When it comes to interior design, wall decals are all the rage these days. With endless colours, styles and patterns available, there is something to match anybody’s personal taste in décor.

In this post we’re going to share with you some tips on how to apply wall decals to get the best from them.

Colour is everything when it comes to décor. Consider how the colour of your wall and furnishings will work with your wall decal. To get this right, ideally you would choose the wall decal first and then select the right paint to go with it. Even though you will be able to see the colours of the decal on your computer screen, they do sometimes look a little different ‘in person’ and you should wait until you have received it before you make your final decision.

Freshly painted walls are not the place for wall decals as paint needs time to ‘cure’ first. This can take up to one month. If you don’t give the paint time to cure first, when you remove the decals you will most likely remove the paint with them.

Before stickers are applied, the walls need to be cleaned thoroughly. Walls collect a hidden layer of dust and this could result in your sticker not adhering to the wall very well. To wash the walls, use warm water and allow them to dry completely. If you are in a hurry, then use a fan to dry the walls thoroughly, and make sure they are completely dry before applying.

High humidity areas can sometimes cause stickers to peel off prematurely. For example, areas close to where there could be steam, such as in the bathroom and the kitchen.

Our last word of advice is to read the manufacturers instructions before applying your wall art. Once you have added them you’ll be pleased that you can get the look that you want in your home with wall decals that will last longer.

3 Tips for Sprucing Up Rental Accommodation

So you’ve scored the flat that you wanted, and you’ve just moved in. It’s now dawning on you that the beige on the walls just does not do it for you! What can you do? Are you really able to live with beige for a whole year?

Not to worry, we’ve got some great ideas about what you can do to your flat that won’t affect your lease agreement. What we’re going to suggest here can be removed without any damage to the flat and you’ll enjoy having something much more attractive than beige walls!

Rental accommodation decorating tip #1: Use Rugs

If you’ve got a nasty shag carpet on your floor, or even some ugly floorboards that you don’t think you can live with then how about a rug? They can be bought in all different sizes, so that you may even be able to reach it right out to the walls. Otherwise you can use smaller ones to hide stains or worn carpet.

Rental accommodation decorating tips #2: Use Wall coverings

You don’t have to live with that beige. You could use a piece of fabric to hang from the walls – use something lightweight and you’ll be able to stick it up with a glue made from cornflour and water. Otherwise, try one of our wall stickers – they are easy to apply and easily removable.

Browse our wall stickers here.

Rental accommodation decorating tips #3: Paint your furniture

There’s never been so much interest in recycling and up-cycling as there is now. If you’ve got some wooden furniture that’s look tired, then give it a lick of paint in your favourite shades. You’ll life the room and you can make it match the rest of the furniture. If you don’t want it plain afterwards, then try adding a few spots or another vinyl sticker. Stickers work great on furniture, and you’ll end up with a unique piece to match your new flat. Sourcing tip: try our search engine on the site to find what you’re looking for.

Plain furniture can be transformed by using wall stickers to give it a new stylish and contemporary look. Here’s our guide on using wall decals to give your furniture some pizzazz:

Keep these points in mind before getting started:

Wall stickers are easy to apply, and easy to remove if you want to sell your furniture or use it in another way. All our stickers are made in vinyl, so they are washable.

Smaller wall sticker kits work well on smaller pieces of furniture such as chairs. For larger pieces such as tables or wardrobes, you can use larger stickers.

When it comes to colour, keep to complementary colours that will match what you have already in the room. You can select accent colours from other decorative items such as soft furnishings.

Ideas for adding wall decals to your furniture:

Here are some ideas to get you started with your own creative inspiration:

Chairs: Wrap your chairs in falling leaves . Falling leaves come on one large sticker, but they can be cut around to separate them and place as you wish. Go spotty by adding a multitude of colourful spot stickers to your favourite pews.

Book cases: Sometimes in Britain, it seems that pigeons will arrive at any place, at any time. Add some pigeon stickers to your bookcase to give it a new look.

You can also add stickers to bedroom furniture, in the bathroom, on your kitchen cupboard doors and you might also like to select something out of our door sticker range. There’s no end to the ways that wall stickers can be used to decorate your home in a unique and stylish way.

Sticking Secrets Revealed: How to Apply Wall Stickers for a Stylish Wall

Applying our vinyl wall stickers is very easy, but there are a couple of things that you need to keep in mind before you get started.

- Our wall stickers are indeed very sticky – once you remove the backing paper and stick your image, you won’t be able to reposition it. So plan ahead and think carefully about where the best place is for it. You can always try it in a position first by using reusable putty such as Blu Tack.

- If you move home, you will not easily be able to take the wall sticker with you. They are easily removable, but they can easily become damaged.

- Hairdryers can be useful when it comes to removing the sticker from a painted wall. It will save you damaging any paintwork as it will warm and soften the adhesive.

Now that you’re ready to go, follow along with these sticking steps:

1. Give the surface a wipe. Any flat surface is ideal for our stickers, but it’s best to check that there is no dust or dirt on the surface first. It will also need to be dry. If you’ve painted the walls lately, give them two weeks to cure before applying stickers.

2. Some of our wall stickers are provided ready to stick, but others may require a little trim with the scissors to tidy them up.

3. You can use either Blu Tack or masking tape to help you compose the scene with your stickers.

4. Start by peeling back the backing paper and sticking the wall sticker to your clean and dry surface.

5. Using a sponge, smooth the sticker onto the wall with a firm motion to prevent air bubbles. Then peel the rest of the backing paper from the sticker, as you use the sponge to distribute any air that is strapped under the vinyl.

Proud To Be British

When it comes to having a party to celebrate a memorable royal event, we British have it down to a T – a tea party that is. Celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be happening all over the United Kingdom, and thousands of loyal subjects will be holding street parties to coincide with the special events that are happening throughout the land.

Nothing makes Britain’s residents more proud than knowing that our monarchy is the envy of the world, and the Queen’s Jubilee has given us even more to be proud of. Elizabeth II is the longest serving British Queen since Queen Victoria.

Party Time

Street parties are a quintessentially British form of celebration and although they were more common in England and Wales in their early days, Scotland and Northern Ireland are getting in on the Diamond Jubilee fun as well.

Tea parties took off in a big way in 1919 when they were given specially for children to celebrate the Versailles Treaty and the end of the First World War. Tea party celebrations are now a natural part of major royal events including coronations, jubilees, and weddings, the most recent of which was the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, now the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

A tea party on the street is an ideal way to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne. They are especially fun for children, and they bring people in the community together who might not otherwise get to know each other. They offer opportunities for putting up cheerful street decorations and consuming a vast number of special teatime cakes and buns.

Taking Part

There are lots of ways to help show the nation’s pride in our Queen and you can be as inventive as you like when it comes to decorating your street for a tea party. A great way of livening things up is with decorative wall stickers, especially ones with a British or tea party theme.

If you are in search of a few good ideas then have a look at the Best of British Wall Stickers collection, which will help you to transform your street for the occasion; an iconic Routemaster London double-decker bus (red, of course) is always welcome, and why not complement it with the classic red telephone box? Give a nod to the countryside with a deer or fox sticker, and don’t forget to add in a red squirrel or two for good measure.

The Time for Tea Wall Stickers collection can also add some colour and fun to your tea party. Stick up some bunting, or get some brightly coloured teacups to liven up walls or windows – the more the merrier!

You can also always hold your own smaller party in your garden with some close friends and relatives. Don’t forget that you will need an outdoor table and chairs for this, or a couple of tables if you are pushing the boat out to include a number of your neighbours.

When your arrangements are done, the cakes and buns are baked, and the tea is piping hot, settle back with some Elgar on the CD player (try Land of Hope and Glory), enjoy being a part of the Jubilee celebrations, and be proud to be British!

How To Clean Wallpaper Easily

In a busy household, it’s easy for wallpaper to get dirty; be it smudges, finger prints or even that splattering that you’re not sure what caused it. Young children can add their own designs to it that are quite often food related, hopefully not permanent marker related! Removing spots and stains on wallpaper can leave the room looking as fresh as a daisy and is well worth the effort.

Here’s the easiest way to do it...

What You Need:

- 1 x pair of Rubber Gloves

- 1 x Duster

- 1 x Bucket of Warm, Soapy Water

- 1 x Bucket of Clean Water

- 1 x Sponge

Move Everything Away From The Wall

To prepare, move furniture to the middle of the room and lay down a sheet to collect soapy drips. You might also want to stick a piece of foam onto any picture nails to remind you where to hang them back up – in particular if your wallpaper is patterned.

Get Ready To Clean

Get your buckets at the ready. If you turn up the cuffs on your rubber gloves, then you’ll catch drips before they go down your sleeves. You might also want to grab a step stool so that you can reach higher up the wall to remove dust. Keep yourself safe by using tools with longer handles when possible.

Get Cleaning

Before you wipe the walls down, run the duster around the room, in particular up high and lower down where it is most likely to settle. If you see some cobwebs, then you might want to use a vacuum cleaner with a long nozzle - the perfect way to remove them.

Wipe the walls down with the soapy water using a squeezed out sponge. Work from the bottom up to avoid dripping down the walls. Most of the marks will come off with a wipe with the sponge. If you come across any particular tricky spots, then you can try removing them with white vinegar mixed with a little water.

As you work around the room, keep an eye on the colour of your water – you may have to change it if it’s looking a little grey. Use the clean water to remove any trace of soap.

Depending upon the material it’s made from, wallpaper can be fairly fragile so work in small spots at a time. If you need to take a break, take it between walls – not half way through a wall.

Once you’ve completed your task, sit back with a cup of tea and enjoy your fresh room.

Before you get started, check out our Flower Tree Wall Sticker – It makes a fun and fresh addition to any wall.

How to Select the Right Wallpaper for You

For many years, wallpaper wasn’t even a consideration when it came to British home décor. It was something that you’d find on the walls of a downmarket pub or possibly at an elderly person’s home but it wasn’t something to even consider adding to your own space. Now things have changed, wallpaper has made a comeback and it’s time to learn how to select the perfect wallpaper for your home.

Where Are You Going To Place It?

Durability needs to be something that is considered when picking your paper. Hanging a fragile paper in a child’s room is only going to result in more work for you. Vinyl papers last longer than most and they are washable so work well in a child’s bedroom, in a kitchen or bathroom.

Consider Your Style

If you have a romantic streak then you’ll be naturally drawn towards the floral styles. Large scale florals have been very popular recently and they are great for a relaxed and comfortable feel.

If you’re a traditionalist the you could find yourself wanting to go with a stripe or a gentle damask. For dining rooms you might want to go for a geometric pattern or something with metallic accents.

Take your time to choose something that will blend with room furnishings. You could approach this by picking one colour from your room furnishings for the wall covering.

Consider The Room Size

Keep in mind that larger rooms can take darker colours. If your rooms are on the cosy side and you’d like to give the illusion of them being bigger than they actually are then it’s wise to go for a lighter colour.

Ask For Help

If you don’t know how much you need, then ask. You just need to provide the room dimensions, measurements of walls and doors and the sales person will help you work out how much you need to buy.

Here’s one final tip, if you’re not ready to change the whole room, then you could always add wallpaper to just one accent wall. Adding it to the end of the room can make the room feel longer.

Check out our Urban Art wall Collection for something a little different.

How Careful Selection of Wallpaper Can Make Your Rooms Look Larger

Wallpaper can be a powerful tool when it comes to perception of space in a room. If you use it in a thoughtful way, then you can transform your home into something that appears to be a lot larger than it actually is.

Use Lighter Colours To Give The Illusion Of A Bigger Room

Whether you use paint or wallpaper, application of a light colour on the walls can give the illusion of a bigger room. If the wall colour is similar to the colour of the room furniture, then that feeling of space comes from the walls appearing to be further back.

Darker colours and busy patterns will make the room feel more cosy and a little smaller.

Small Patterns Or No Patterns Work Best

Using wallpaper of a light colour with no visible pattern is going to deliver the illusion of more space than one with a busy pattern. If you have a smaller home and you do want to use a pattern, go for one that is has a smaller and paler design. You might even want to try a texture as opposed to a pattern. Pin dot designs and very narrow stripes can also give the illusion of the room being larger than it actually is.

Shimmery wallpaper can reflect light and so the room will appear to look larger. You also won’t get the unpleasant clash with your furniture that can happen with busy wallpapers.

Make The Room Look Taller

A low ceiling can be given a small vertical stripe wallpaper to lift it higher by tricking the eye.

Make The Room Look Longer

Adding wallpaper to just one wall in the room can give the illusion of the room being longer than it actually is. The most effective way to produce this effect is by wallpapering the wall at the far end of the room, and using colour on the walls (either paint or wallpaper) that is light coloured but coordinates with the wallpaper.

If you’ve opted to use pale colours in your room but want a pattern to lift the décor, then check out our Pattern Collection.

Two Wallpaper Removal Solutions You Can Make at Home

You’ve decided to surprise the family by hanging new wallpaper over the weekend that they’re away, but it’s now evening, you want to make a start but you don’t have what you need. The wallpaper is stuck fast!

You can make wallpaper removal solutions at home that are just as good as those offered in the DIY stores and they’re lower cost too. All you need to get started is a plastic spray bottle and some hot water.

Fabric softener – take off the top of the spray bottle and add 1 part liquid fabric softener to 2 parts hot water. Give it a very good shake. Now score the wallpaper with your tool so that there are plenty of abrasions for the solution to soak into.

Spray the wall and wait for 10 minutes. Your wall should now be ready to start peeling the wallpaper from the bottom by the skirting board.

Another solution that you can try is 1 part white vinegar with 5 parts hot water. Mix the two together and again, spray onto a wall that has been scored with a tool. Once it soaks in, it should make wallpaper removal a breeze.

Wallpaper is easiest to remove if you start at the bottom of it, and peel upwards. If you are left with strips of paper stuck on the wall that refuse to come off, then give them a good soaking with your solution. Using warm water usually works best as it will dilute old paste to release the paper.

For protection of your floors, use an old bed sheet. It will soak in any liquid – as opposed to a plastic sheet or a tarpaulin that will collect the liquid in pools. You’ll save yourself time and trouble.

If you want some inspiration on what to put in place of your old wallpaper, take a look at our living and dining room wall sticker collections.

The Quickest and Easiest Way to Remove Wallpaper

Once you start to see your wallpaper getting a bit shabby around the edges, then it’s time for a change. Wallpaper can be a struggle to remove if it’s been up for donkeys years, and if it is, then not to worry – you’re about to learn how you can do it in a jiffy.

Taking old wallpaper down can be just what your room needs to get a new fresh look. If the condition of your walls is pretty good, you can decide to paint over them instead, but with all the new designs and styles of wallpaper that are now available – it would be a shame to miss out.

Tools for the job:

Wallpaper scorer

Wallpaper removal solution

Bucket of warm soapy water

Paint roller

sponge

Wallboard knife

Steamer

Old sheet

Pull it off

Sometimes things go just the way that we want them to. The wallpaper can be grabbed in the corner and it will peel away easily. Take it slow and steady and it’s likely to come off in one strip.

Score the paper

If your wallpaper is not having any of that – then it’s time to pull out the tools and the wallpaper removal solution. Put your sheet down to protect the floor before you get started. An old bed sheet is usually better than a plastic one as it will allow liquid to soak in.

The wallpaper solution remover is usually provided in a spray bottle, so score the paper. Then be generous with your spraying, give it time to soak in and help it with the sponge or the paint roller to distribute if necessary. After ten minutes or so it will have soaked in – in the meantime, down tools for a quick cuppa.

After a couple of biccies, it’s time to get back to work with peeling off the wallpaper. Pull out your wallboard knife and begin at the bottom of the wall. You may be able to peel off the paper in large strips, depending on its condition.

Once you’ve removed all the paper, then it’s time to wash down the walls with the soapy water. This will remove any sticky residue left from the paste.

Now your wall is ready for its new covering. Take a look at our bestselling wall stickers if you fancy something a little different.

Colour Splash Interiors

For all the beautiful images of the most aspirational and inspiring homes from all over the world the reality is that many of us live in homes styled in a much safer and more neutral fashion. The incredible piece of wall art in the picture above can’t help but catch our eye and make us dream just a little of making a bold and daring statement for ourselves, but then doubt creeps in and we wonder how we could ever make it work, and do we have the room, and where do we even begin??? Perhaps the best place to start then is with the basics and then build in confidence and experience from there…

A great way to inject some life into your rooms and make people do a double-take is to introduce some subtle co-ordinating colour splashes or colour pops to dramatic effect. Placing one bright, bold statement piece into an otherwise muted space creates a focal point that draws the eye, adding some much needed energy. Go a little further and match just a few more items in the same vibrant shades and your room will really come alive and start to feel like one carefully designed space.

Naturally we think one of the best solutions is to add in a decal or two! Why? Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, our wall stickers come in a range of colours for you to choose from, so if you feel like you want to create a strong theme like in the picture below you can simply pick your sticker in the colour and style that matches the other pieces in the room. Alternatively use one of our colourful designs as the main colour splash in your room to create an impactful focal point. Secondly, all of our products are designed to be easily removable, which provides a great opportunity for flexibility – simply peel them off when it’s time to update your colour, avoiding the time, effort and expense of completely redecorating.

If you’re feeling enthused but need a little more convincing, you can follow The Binary Box tumblr blog to see the images and ideas we find from around the web, and you can also find all the images in this post and many more from the following Tumblr bloggers, all of which are a great source of interiors and design inspiration:

We're continually working on custom wall sticker projects for all kinds of clients, from homes to businesses, and retailers to bars, but we thought we'd share this one as it's another great example of the team that commissioned it succesfully applying a large and complicated sticker for themselves...

...We were contacted by The Bug Detective to create an over-sized sized sticker from the artwork they had supplied. As usual we worked with them to talk through their needs and find the best solution based on the technology available and their budget. The stickers pictured were printed to match their exact specification - always important and sensitive considerations for us when dealing with carefully constructed corporate identities.

The final articles were carefully packaged and sent via courier to The Bug Detective office, where they put these very large stickers up themselves and achieved some very professional and "spectacular" results!

If you'd like to discuss a custom logo wall sticker with us or any other design you have in mind, please feel free to get in touch with your requirements and we'll be happy to provide a quote and talk you through the process.

The team over at Ideas Pad sent us some great photos of their newly applied custom project and we think they've done a brilliant job in realising their ambitious vison. We've previously supplied them with our Urban Art Monkey Bomb wall decal and when they moved into a bigger new office they got back in touch with some artwork and dimensions and we worked with them to make sure everything fitted exactly as it was supposed to. Read on to find out more...

We got back to Ideas Pad with a detailed set of artworks showing how the design would fit, and once approved, it was printed in full colour to exactly match with their corporate colours and then chopped into sections for easy assembly on site. With the help of a handy diagram it took one evening for them to put the whole lot up and the results are really impressive!

Forest Falls 1 & Blue Diamond 5 & Summer Breeze 4 – Dulux.com

This great collection is inspired by the escapism of nature. These beautiful colours are sure to give your home that outside-inside feel!

We’re also really loving the calm and peaceful shades that are on-trend with the Beach theme interior stores are going crazy for! This trend isn’t exactly new, but it’s one that’s so classic it’s predicted to make come-back after come-back. Here are some images to get you inspired to create your own nautical-nest!

nautical-living.co.uk

Louise Garman.net

http://morgandesigninc.blogspot.com/

This nautical style is probably one of the easiest design trends to achieve, and it’s hot for 2011! Combine crisp whites and cold blues to create rooms that look like they belong in a lighthouse. Don’t forget to add some natural rope as well … you can never have enough natural rope in your nautical-themed rooms!

cocomale.com

We also played around with Adobe Kuler to give you some great ideas from both of these colour trends. Have you ever played with Kuler? We really recommend it! You could spend hours in front of it just creating fun colour combinations. (It’s definitely a site to look at if you’re thinking of re-decorating!)

Here are some of the ones we came up with following these two colour trends:

Kuler is great in that you can create colour combinations from existing images, which makes being on-trend more effortless! So sit back and relax, knowing that if you have a specific colour or pantone in mind, you can ask our bespoke service to colour-match your stickers for you. Now there’s no excuse not to get creative ;)

Time for Tea

Fancy a Cuppa? One Sticker or Two?!

You might have got a little mailer this week from us about our new range, Time for Tea. We decided we should also give you all a bit more of a run-down on it, so we’re writing this blog (plus we just wanted to show off because we’re so proud of it!)

Time for Tea was inspired by the English-Country-living interiors trend that’s happening right now. We think it’s really inspirational and we at The Binary Box are in love with it! We also really like the hand-made culture that comes with the country farm life and decided a range should be grounded in these ideals.

The collection has seven designs, and we aimed at them having a more interactive aspect than usual. Check out our blackboard and whiteboard wall stickers

–

Do I hear you all saying “ooooh” and “aaah”?! Thought so!

We’ve also designed some Vintage style bunting that looks amazing on the wall! Plus, it’s fab because you can cut them with scissors to fit any sized space.

We would also like to introduce our very first (drum-roll please) clock wall sticker! This is our first design for a clock, but you can definitely expect more of this sort of thing in the future because we had so much fun with it! This fabulously cool sticker comes complete with a Karlsson clock mechanism and fun English-themed stickers with numbers on them! So now, instead of buying one of these boring clocks:

You can buy one of these!

There are alot more great new ranges planned for 2011 with simarly exciting designs and our next collection will be launching shortly. If you want to be the first to hear about our new collections then sign up to our newsletter at the bottom of this page. .

Hello and welcome to our new look blog and website, we decided to do some spring cleaning and spruce up the look and feel of what we do for 2011. The new site is packed with new features designed to make it easier for you to find the products you want and then customise them to fit your home. Also keep your eyes peeled as we have some exciting new ranges on the way which we will be starting to launch in the next two weeks and regularly throughout the year. We hope you like what we have done and appreciate any comments so that we can keep on improving what we do.
